About
I am an aspiring scholar of Japanese Early Modern history, who began the MA Art History program at the University of Hawaii, Manoa in Fall 2009.
My prior background includes a MA in Japanese Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, curatorial internship experience at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Japan Society (New York), and the intensive Japanese language program at the Inter-University Center in Yokohama.
My research interests fall into several somewhat overlapping camps.
*Okinawan history, culture, and identity. Ryukyu Kingdom, Okinawan painting, trade relations, identity in different periods, folk songs & Okinawan pop
*Urbanization, urban history, and urban culture of Edo period Japan. Especially kabuki, ukiyo-e, etc.
*Regional/local history of Edo period Japan, focusing upon individual cities or provinces in a holistic manner, covering the social, economic, cultural, and political history of a single given locale. Particular interest in Kanazawa.
*Pre-modern & Early Modern Japanese trade and relations with Southeast Asia; port cities, merchant houses, Nihonmachi, piracy, personal correspondence and relations between prominent figures
