My dissertation is a comparative study of how late twentieth century perceptions of globalization and human mobility affect nationalisms in Singapore and the United States. My research is based on analyses of popular, mass, literary, and cultural texts--including newspapers, performances, novels, and poetry. Through these various texts, I examine the relationship between form and globalization. I develop the concept of “exterior nationalism,” to articulate the ways that contemporary processes of globalization transform conceptions of space and time both within and outside of the nation-state and thus affect the ways that nationalism is and can be expressed.
My research and teaching interests include: cultural studies in Asia and the Pacific, critical theory, globalization and transnationalism, diaspora, postcolonial literature, and Asian American literature.
